Why North Shore

The industry consolidated. We didn't.

Over the last decade, the big national distributors absorbed the independent shops that used to know your floor — and what most manufacturers got in return was a login, a call center, and a part number. We built NSIT to be the opposite: an independent, technically focused partner with the breadth of the big houses and the responsiveness they gave up.

How ball nose parameters work
ADOC < 50% of diameter: Tool only cuts on part of its radius. Calculate effective cutting diameter (De) and use it for RPM and chip load — do not use actual D.
ADOC ≥ 50% of diameter: Use standard slotting speeds & feeds with actual D. Apply long-reach projection correction if gauge length exceeds 2.5×D.
De = 2×√(R²−(R−ADOC)²)  ·  IPTadj = (D×IPTslot)/De  ·  RPM = (SFM×3.82)/De  ·  h = ae²/(8R)

A new era in aerospace machining

Inconel, Rene, Waspaloy, the whole heat-resistant superalloy family — the metals that make turbine and engine work brutal on tooling. We bring the Tungaloy NTK BIDEMICS and ceramic grades that turn and mill them at carbide-beating speeds, the Korloy MSD Plus-S carbide drills that put clean holes through them, and the application specialists to prove it on your machine. Fewer tools, faster cycles, lower cost per part.

BIDEMICS: twice the speed, or twice the life

BIDEMICS is a patented composite grade built for nickel-based superalloys. Against whisker ceramics you can run roughly double the cutting speed — or hold the same speed and get dramatically longer tool life. JX1 handles rough-no-scale and semi-finish turning in rigid setups with excellent notch-wear resistance; JX3 adds toughness for corners, grooving, and lower-rigidity work; JP2 finishes up to 520 m/min, beating CBN and carbide on both speed and surface finish.

Carbide strength, ceramic speed — now for milling

The new CERAMATIC Brazed end mills join an SX9 SiAlON ceramic cutting end to a carbide shank, so you get ceramic milling speed on Inconel and other HRSA without the breakage risk of a solid-ceramic tool. About 25% more rigidity than a solid-ceramic shank keeps it stable even at 3–4× diameter overhang, and the line starts at ø6 mm. NTK reports up to 16× the tool life and up to 12–15× the productivity of carbide end mills on aircraft Inconel 718 parts — run dry, at 300 m/min and up.

Korloy MSD Plus-S · Through-coolant carbide · 3D / 5D / 8D / 10D

Hole-making built for the alloys that break drills

When the hole is in Inconel, Rene, or a titanium alloy, an ordinary carbide drill work-hardens the wall, packs its flutes, and snaps. The Korloy MSD Plus-S is a solid-carbide, internal-coolant drill built for exactly that cut: notch-control cutting edges and special edge preparation stop the chipping and sudden breakage, while wide chip pockets, an optimized 140° point, and a back-tapered margin flush heat and chips clear of the hole. The new PC325T coating holds its edge through the high-temperature, work-hardening conditions that end most drills early. In Korloy’s own Inconel 718 testing it drilled twice as many holes as the competing drill at a lower, steadier thrust — and the range now runs from 3×D up to 8×D and 10×D for deep-hole work in the same alloys.

Specials & Custom Tooling

When the catalog doesn't have it, we engineer it.

A catalog ends where your part begins. NSIT engineers and sources the special and custom tooling that catalog houses send back — from a modified standard to a full made-to-print tool — with one goal: cutting your cost per part, cycle time, setup, and tool changes. Backed by our application specialists and premier partners like ARCH Cutting Tools and AB Tools.

Made-to-print customs

Bring a print; we engineer the special through our partners — ARCH Cutting Tools, AB Tools, Mikron Tool and more — and prove it on your machine. Step drills, custom form tools, complex multi-feature round tools, special diameters, PCD and CBN — combined to take steps out of your process.

Modified and custom-ground standard inserts — altered geometry, radii and coatings
02 · Modified standards

Modified & custom-ground standards

Often you don't need a clean-sheet special — just a standard tuned to your job: altered diameters, corner radii, necks, reach, and coatings. Faster and lower-cost than a full custom, ground to your feature.

Custom NSHP end mills

Our private-label NSHP line goes beyond the 292 stock SKUs — custom solid-carbide end mills to your diameter, flute count, geometry, and coating. Engineered in the USA, precision-crafted in Poland, at NSHP pricing.

A worn carbide insert beside the same insert after regrinding — used tooling made usable again
04 · Regrind & downsize

Used tooling → usable again

Don’t buy new steel to get a special. Worn inserts and round tools can be reground to spec — or downsized into a smaller standard size or a different form. Regrinds run about half the price of a new insert, in carbide, ceramic, cermet, PCD and CBN, held to new-tool tolerances. Ship us the used tooling; we sort it, quote what’s serviceable, and credit the rest.

A single indexable tool turns front, back, profile, and face — no tool changes, no extra stations. New low-force chipbreakers and high-feed back-turning pull time out of the operation while keeping the edge in the cut longer, and six corners per insert keep cost-per-part honest.

DoFeedTri: shallow cut, serious feed

High-feed milling takes a light axial depth and runs it at aggressive feed per tooth. The low lead angle drives cutting force up into the spindle, so the setup stays stable while metal comes off fast — built for roughing pockets, faces, and dies. DoFeedTri's double-sided inserts carry six cutting edges, so the speed doesn't come with a cost-per-edge penalty.

Deep grooving and parting punish a weak insert seat — the edge deflects, chips pack the slot, and cutoff walks off size. AddForceCut locks a single-ended insert into a self-clamping seat with three contact faces and a stopper, so it holds position through deep, interrupted cuts and evacuates chips cleanly. Swiss-type precision, proven in the cut

On Swiss and sub-spindle lathes the part is measured in microns and the machine is expected to run unattended overnight. That’s where tooling stops being a line item and starts deciding whether the job holds size or shuts down at 2 a.m. We bring the newest Tungaloy NTK Swiss-type system — quick-change modular heads, chip control tuned for automatics, and micron-level center-height control — to the medical, micro, and precision parts that leave no margin for error.

In small-diameter turning (ø10 mm and under) center height quietly governs everything — effective rake angle, flank wear, burr formation, even dimensional accuracy. A few hundredths off the centerline changes how the part cuts. TMV: wiper finish for vibration cutting

Built for front turning on Swiss CNC lathes running the vibration-cutting (LFV) function, the TMV geometry minimizes cutting resistance and keeps chips forming cleanly even as the tool oscillates. Its added wiper holds a superior surface finish at higher feeds — so you can push feed toward double the rate and tool life, and cut machining time roughly in half, without giving up finish.

NTK650: finish & life on small parts

NTK650 is a PVD-coated carbide grade tuned for small-diameter turning (up to ø20 mm) across steel, stainless, and heat-resistant work (P / M / S). Strong anti-adhesion properties suppress built-up edge and streaking, so surface finish stays consistent and inspection time drops — with NTK case studies showing anywhere from 1.8× to 5× the tool life of the grade it replaced.

Shaper Duo: hex & socket forms, no broach

Hexagon, square, and hexalobular (6-lobe) socket forms usually mean a rotary broach — high tool pressure that shoves small parts off location, plus a dedicated tool per size. Shaper Duo shapes those forms right on the lathe with a solid-carbide, PVD-coated insert in a Stick Duo sleeve holder: low cutting forces that suit small-diameter parts, better cycle time and finish than broaching, and one tool line covering a full range of sizes.

Surface conditioning · Automated deburring & finishing

Stop deburring by hand. Let the spindle finish the part.

Manual deburring is slow, inconsistent, and the first thing that scraps a good part. We bring NOGA MT's automated deburring and finishing system — UFIBER nano-ceramic fiber brushes plus the UBURR and USPOT tooling — so edge-break, polish, and back-machining happen in-cycle on your CNC or robot cell. Repeatable Ra, no flipped parts, no bench.

NTK Friction Stir Welding · Joining tooling

Join metal without melting it

Friction stir welding is a solid-state process: a rotating tool stirs two metals together below their melting point, forging a high-strength, defect-free joint with no filler, no spatter, and no fumes. We supply NTK's ceramic and carbide FSW tooling — custom-ground for everything from EV busbars and battery cases to stainless hulls and high-tensile steel.

NTK FSW · In action NTK friction stir welding tool joining metal in a solid-state weld
Why FSW

A stronger join, with less weight and no weld defects

Because the base metal never melts, FSW avoids the porosity, distortion, and heat-affected weakness of fusion welding — and it joins dissimilar metals that can't be fused at all. For structural and lightweighting work, it replaces bolted joints outright.

Medical Device & Orthopedics · Implant machining

A new standard in medical machining

Bone screws, pedicle screws, and trauma hardware live or die on one feature: the hexalobular socket (TORX®). Cut it in titanium, stainless, or cobalt–chrome and it work-hardens, burrs, and eats tools. We bring Mikron Tool's Hexalobe family — a combined drill and a micro endmill that machine the socket about 50% faster, near burr-free, with a chrome-free coating built for implants — plus the application specialists to prove the cycle time on your machine.

The Hexalobe strategy: two tools, three steps

Four operations — drilling, chamfering, milling, deburring — collapsed into three steps with just two tools. The combined drill does double duty: it opens the bore and chamfer up front, then comes back to deburr.

Step 01 · Drill

Step 02 · Mill
Cut the lobes
CrazyMill Hexalobe
The micro endmill cuts the hexalobular profile by vibration-free helical interpolation (pitch up to 0.8×d) or side milling. CoCr and stainless get a lobe pre-drill first.
Step 03 · Deburr
Re-chamfer clean
CrazyDrill Hexalobe
The combined drill returns for a light re-chamfer, leaving a nearly burr-free socket — and cutting out the secondary hand-finishing that usually follows.
CrazyDrill · Micro-drilling titanium

Drilling titanium at micro scale — deep, fast, in control

Titanium fights back with heat and stringy chips that pack a small hole and snap micro-drills. Mikron's CrazyDrill family answers with coolant delivered right to the cutting edge, an entry and flute geometry tuned to clear chips, and wear- and heat-resistant coatings — so you drill deeper and faster in Ti-6Al-4V and other implant and aerospace alloys without pecking the cycle to death. New products that pull time out of the job

We're always bringing in tooling that earns its place on your floor — not new for the sake of new, but tools that cut cost-per-part, setup time, or downtime. First up: a smarter way to change inserts.

Power-loosen the old insert, power-tighten the new one, then the clutch idles the instant it reaches your preset torque — so every screw seats to spec, with no over- or under-tightening. A built-in LED lights the pocket, it recharges over USB-C, and one charge handles roughly 400 screws. Less time per index, fewer inserts lost to bad torque, more spindle uptime.

Races are won at the pit stop

On a live-tool lathe, the clock that costs you is the one you don’t watch — the minutes bleeding out at every tool change and setup. The patented EWS.Varia VX quick-change system turns a tool change into a pit stop: presets happen offline, and driven or static tools drop into the turret in seconds, repeatably. Less time at the turret, more spindle hours, lower cost per part.

Change tools like a pit crew, not a night shift

Live tools for drilling, milling, and tapping — plus static turning — all run one patented quick-change interface. Tools are preset offline in the T-Carrier magazine and swapped in-machine one-handed, so the turret never waits on a wrench. It’s the heart of EWS’s “Ready. Safe. Go.” setup concept, and it fits the VDI and BMT turrets you already run.

Frequently asked questions

What does North Shore Industrial Tool (NSIT) sell?

NSIT is a technical distributor of precision cutting tools and MRO supplies for manufacturers. Core categories include metalworking and cutting tools, finishing and surface conditioning, abrasives, metalworking fluids, MRO and safety supplies, and metrology — hundreds of premier brands managed through one partner.

What areas does NSIT serve?

NSIT ships precision cutting tools and its NSHP solid carbide end mill line to manufacturers throughout the United States. Hands-on application support — specialists working on-site at the machine — is concentrated across New England and the Northeast, where NSIT is based in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

What brands does NSIT distribute?

NSIT distributes hundreds of premier brands, including Tungaloy NTK, Kyocera, Korloy, YG-1, IMCO, Mikron Tool, REGO-FIX, XEBEC, Mitutoyo, Vermont Gage, Haimer, Micro 100, Carmex, RobbJack and HWR — across cutting, finishing, workholding, fluids, and metrology.

What are NSHP end mills and how much do they cost?

North Shore High-Performance (NSHP) is NSIT's private-label line of solid carbide end mills, engineered in the USA and precision-crafted in Poland. The stock program covers 292 options from 1/8" to 1" diameter, 3–8 flute, in square, ball nose, and corner-radius profiles, with square end mills starting at $15.

Does NSIT supply custom or special tooling?

Yes. NSIT engineers and sources special and custom tooling to your print — made-to-print customs through our brand partners, modified and custom-ground standard tools, custom NSHP solid carbide end mills beyond the 292 stock SKUs, and regrind and reconditioning to bring worn tools back to spec. Send a print or a problem tool and an application specialist will spec it and quote it.

Does NSIT regrind or recondition cutting tools?

Yes. Through our partnership with ARCH Cutting Tools, NSIT reconditions and regrinds used drills, round tools, and end mills back to like-new condition — or reworks them into new specials. With carbide prices rising, it is one of the fastest ways to cut tooling cost: one recurring re-manufacturing program has saved a medical customer over $200,000 a year for more than five years. Send us your worn tools for a quote.

Does NSIT manage tool inventory or vending?

Yes. NSIT offers vendor-managed inventory (VMI) and SupplyPoint industrial vending, so shops keep the right tooling on hand and buyers stop chasing parts, with usage tracked and reorders automated.
